Balearic Island Retreat

Transforming a crumbling 90s villa into a dreamy Palm Springs-inspired island hideaway.

Laura and Patrick spent three years living and renovating and building beautiful properties in Mallorca before they moved back to the UK in 2011 and set up their business there. They always had a dream to return to the islands to renovate again and in 2017 they found the perfect property tucked away on the beautiful and totally unspoilt island of Menorca. The island is such a hidden gem filled with so much natural beauty and this house is the perfect place to enjoy the best Menorca has to offer.

It was built on a large rural plot in 1990 and felt in need of updating. Laura and Patrick also wanted to open up more space inside the house to create an open-plan feel and then also create a number of distinct areas outside to relax and entertain. Entertaining is always central to Laura’s designs - from elegant bars to beautiful, wistful bedrooms for guests, Laura and Patrick love nothing more than sharing their homes with friends and family and this always shows in their designs.

The renovation was completed within 6 months and the house is now one of the most successful rentals on the island in terms - it was even selected by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the best houses in Europe for groups.

With the beautiful bougainvillaea climbing the balconies and the three symmetrical arches, we felt the architecture was reminiscent of 70s Palm Springs, so I was excited to create something unique and fun here.

We created cool, breezy interiors, with Slim Aarons prints on the walls, and pale wood furnishings.

The colour of the tiles really pops and creates a sense of fun that we wanted the house to have – it’s a holiday space after all.

The large second living room with a huge corner sofa, TV, fireplace, board games, and cosy bean bags provides an ideal space for relaxing with the family.

Bright and full of light, it has a beach house feel with white woodwork and natural textures and pops of colour create a sense of fun throughout.

As the house isn’t an old finca, but a villa built in the 1990s, we chose to make the bathrooms more modern, injecting colour with tiles and aged brass.

Outside, we created a private barefoot beach bar lined with playful pastel tiles, egg-shaped hanging chairs, Fez-style pouffes and a hammock strung up beside the inviting pool.

The overall feel is Palm Springs meets Balearics – a fun, fresh and happy place to spend time.
