Laura Butler-Madden's Evening Ritual

Those who know me well will know two things about me – the first is that I’m a creature of habit and the second it that I love bedtime! At this time of year, with temperatures dropping I always like to start a cosier bedtime ritual and really take the time to wind down and relax before bed. In the summer months it’s light until late and bedtime is something that just happens…either falling into bed after a long, hectic day or collapsing under the duvet after a fun evening with friends!

But now that it’s dark from 4.30pm, it’s definitely time to make the most of cosiness, pampering, bedtime and sleep.

My bedside table houses various bits and bobs, all selected to make bedtime a little more luxurious. I always keep a hand cream, a foot cream and my favourite perfume by the bed, as well as a face spray, which is such a treat to spray on before sleep. Oh and I can’t sleep without an eye mask these days. A habit I started last year, but really helps me shut out the outside world, especially if your husband likes to read on his iPad late into the night!

In the winter I also take more time looking after my skin, so this a a key part of my bedtime ritual. But before that, I prepare the bedroom by lighting a candle, fluffing the pillows and changing into my pyjamas. My current favourites are these beautiful silk blue and white striped set from Asceno, that were a birthday present from Patrick.

I usually take a herbal tea up with me – either chamomile or a Clipper blend – I have a bit of an obsession with their lovely teas! Prior to removing my makeup I sip my tea and depending on my mood, either flick through a magazine or head straight for my book. It’s a lovely way to get away from technology and let my mind calm before actually getting into bed.

One I’ve finished my tea I then head into the bathroom for take off my make up, cleanse and moisturise before bed. In the winter I find it particularly important to take good care of my skin and give it lots of extra moisture. I’m currently in love with the Pro-Collagen range from Elemis. As a real beauty addict – I always have loved trying new things, but this anti-aging range from Elemis is a classic, and  something that I’ve used on and off since my celebrity PR days, when a number of my clients were addicted to it.

For winter I find it perfect – the cream a lovely richness to it that really leaves my skin feeling pampered and hydrated. I start with the award winning Cleansing Balm – the smell is divine and it leaves my skin feeling amazing. With the warm cloth to take it off, it also feels like a lovely, luxurious ritual. I then use the Marine Oil, which is beautifully light on the skin, but very moisturising. In warmer months I find this oil enough on its own, but in the colder months,  I follow it with the Oxygenating Night Cream.

After I’ve taken care of my skincare, I head back into the bedroom, climb into bed with my book and blow out the candle, before reading for as long as I can manage before sleep takes over! Do you have a winter bedtime routine? I would love to hear about it!

Laura Butler-Madden's Winter Beauty Round-up

Those who know me will know that I’m a bit of a beauty addict – I’m also very brand loyal, so once I find a brand I love I do like to keep using it, which can cause it’s own issues as there are so many gorgeous brands out there to try! I also like to as much as possible to stick to natural products as I’m quite conscious about what I’m putting on my skin. I’m a huge fan of both Ren and Cowshed, which have amazing natural ranges – I have recently started using Cowshed’s new deodorant, Cow Pit, which I’m so pleased to have discovered. I’ve been looking for an effective chemical free deodorant for a long time and this one really fits the bill.

I’ve also recently discovered the brand Figs & Rouge – I simply love their range of products – the packaging is classy in monochrome and they use natural bio-active technology. I think in Winter it’s particularly important to look after and nourish your skin, so I wanted to share my top Winter beauty buys!

Laura Butler-Madden's Winter Beauty Round-up

  • First on my list is sleep! In winter I find I’m always lower in energy and so a good night’s sleep is even more important. For Christmas I was given a beautiful satin eye mask from Olivia Von Halle and it’s changed the way I sleep. In the past I have only ever used an eye mask when travelling on long haul flights, but over the last couple of months I’ve been channelling Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl and wearing it each night at home too. I can’t tell you how much it’s changed my sleep – although I don’t think I’m sleeping for longer, I am definitely sleeping more deeply, with less interruptions. And you just can put a price on a good night’s sleep!
  • A moisturising bath oil is really important to keep skin soft in winter months – my current choice is Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil from Ren.
  • It’s important to moisturise well after your bath too – for best results apply a moisturiser or oil while your skin is still a little damp – I’m currently using Moroccan Rose Otto Body Lotion, but another of my favourites is Divine Oil by Caudalie, which really does smell divine!
  • Also make sure you cleanse your skin well morning and night, but in the colder months use something gentle on your skin. My current choice is Figs & Rouge Clarifianté Purifying and I’m also loving their Hydra – Active 3 in 1 Hero Cream – perfect for dry skin on face or hands.
  • Really nourish your skin in Winter – I adore Chantecaille and I find the Aromacologie Vital Essence and Flower Harmonizing Cream perfect for these cold months, so I use those every morning and a night oil every evening – currently I’m using Själ Saphir Concentrate oil, which is a great product. Don’t be put off by the price tag as one small bottle will last months – I’ve had mine since October and it’s still going strong!
  • In Winter I wear also tend to wear a bit more make up – in summer I only wear a tinted moisturiser, but at the moment I feel that I need a bit more colour and coverage, so am using Chantecaille (I told you I was brand loyal!) Future Skin in Nude.
  • Otherwise I tend to keep my make up quite simple – YSL Touche Eclat and YSL Mascara and a slick of lipgloss…
  • Lips need a lot of care in Winter – currently I am loving Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil – it glides on, it really moisturising and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. The same goes for their Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector, I love the soft colour that it gives – very natural and flattering.
  • Finally my choices for Winter scent! As I mentioned above, I have recently discovered Cowshed’s Cow Pit, which I love – it smells divine and it actually works, which isn’t always the case with natural deodorants. For perfume I’m a huge fan of Bella Bellissima – it’s a really upmarket, niche perfume brand sold in stores such as Selfridges and Fortnum’s. When it comes to scent I like to be unique and for this Bella is perfect. She has a large range with something to suit everyone. I’m currently alternating between Perfect Life and N0 3 – if you haven’t tried them before then I highly recommend popping to the counter in Selfridges for a good sniff!

I’ve recently launched a ‘Lifestyle’ section on the blog so I can share some of my favourite non-interiors related things with you. This is my first post about beauty products and as we are away in beautiful Pollensa and the weather is very, very hot, I am sharing my top beauty buys for surviving the summer heat.

First up and so important is a good sun hat. Mine this year is from Pia Rossini and I love it – I have also launched the new shopping pages on the site and the hat is available in the ‘Travel‘ section, so do go and check it out!

When it comes to summer make up I like to keep it simple and focus on protecting my skin. As a child and teenager I probably spent far too much time tanning (didn’t we all?!), so now I can be mostly found under an umbrella with my kindle and a bottle of factor 50!

Here is a list of the top products I’m using this year…

Lancaster Sun Oil SPF30 – I love this spray as it’s so easy to apply and it gives a gentle golden sheen.

Sarah Chapman Dynamic Defence – a fab day cream that’s not too heavy in the heat.

Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial – a fantastic night oil that really helps repair and moisturise your skin after a day in the sun.

Eau Cellular Water Spray by Institut Esthedederm – I couldn’t be without this is in the heat! So cool and refreshing – I have a handbag size one so it comes everywhere with me.

La Roche Posay BB Cream SPF50 – this is a new discovery for me this summer and it’s amazing. It gives a totally mat and flawless look, but also provides great protection.

Chanel Lipgloss – I keep make up to a minimum in the summer, but a this is a great all-year-round product and I love the stylish Chanel packaging too.

Chantecaille Mascara – this is an amazing mascara, it’s called Longest Lash mascara and it really is. It also doesn’t seem to smudge much in the sun, which is a real bonus.

Pixi Glow Tonic – a beauty blogger favourite, this is a miracle product – I use it morning at night after removing my make up and really notice a difference to my skin and overall complexion.

Chantecaille Oil Free Foundation – a beautifully light foundation that glides onto the skin, it’s great for balmy evenings as it gives a very fresh and natural look.

So those are all my summertime beauty favourites and you can shop the full selection below.

I’ve been asked for a little while by readers about my beauty and fashion tastes and this is my first post straying from interiors and travel, so would love to hear your feedback!
